Unit 1: Activity 1 "Drawing a Piece of the Puzzle"

Drawing a Piece of the Puzzle
(Review of Grid Drawing Purpose)

Each student will receive a piece of the puzzle and use the outer edge of their square piece of paper to translate the lines inside perfectly into the new space.  When placed together, the class will create a large proportional duplication of the image.

How does this relate to drawing a still life:

Although you do not draw grid lines on a still life drawing, the idea of the grid system can be used to correctly translate proportions on your drawing.  When you draw an object (usually the largest piece) you can use this piece to draw everything else around it.  For example in the image above you can see that the bottom of the neck of the small bottle on the right side of the page lines up with the bottom of the handle of the pitcher on the left.  A ruler can be used to draw that line across lightly keeping objects perfectly in line.
